The History of Dolls
At one time dolls were all the rage. There are hundreds of historical references from ancient Babylonia to the Renaissance of medieval England. In fact, many of the Renaissance figures in Leonardo da Vinci’s painting “Mona Lisa” were probably doll-sized. While they had the power to control us, they were also scary and mysterious. They were shown wearing animal skins or sometimes naked. Most often it was just a simple foot with a bird as a footrest or an accessory. These stories were told for entertainment value. A few decades ago it was mostly the younger generation that purchased these figures. It wasn’t until the 1950’s when the fashion industry made doll dolls more acceptable for children.
The Purpose of Dolls
I am a strong believer that dolls and fashion dolls can be powerful tools for women. They can help young girls to develop their creative and creative confidence. I am concerned that our society is seeing young girls turn away from dolls and role-playing as they adopt the stereotypical girl’s toys of make-up, teen style, and non-fleshy dolls. Bumbleberry Girls are a step in the right direction towards encouraging the care and development of young girls and instilling a sense of inclusiveness and self-worth into our young women. The BumbleBerry Girls have been featured in a variety of local and national media.
